Access to Safe Abortion Care in Uganda: Closing the Gap Between Legal Entitlement and Life-Saving Reality
Women With A Mission Uganda (WWM) operates in Eastern Uganda at the
intersection of sexual and reproductive health, gender-based violence (GBV),
and human rights, with particular reach among female sex workers, women
who use drugs, gender-affirming persons, adolescent girls and young women
(AGYM), and survivors of GBV. From this vantage point, WWM witnesses daily
the human cost of Uganda’s failed translation of policy into practice: women
presenting in extremis having attempted self-managed abortions in secret;
adolescent girls removed from school following unintended pregnancies;
HIV-positive women denied the very procedures that their own Ministry of
Health guidelines entitle them to receive.
